Harold Robbins
(1916-1997)

Harold Robbins, born Harold Rubin in New York City during the Fist World War, Robbins claimed to be a Jewish orphan who had been raised in a Catholic boys' home, whereas in reality he was the son of well-educated Russian- and Polish-Jewish immigrants. He dropped out of high school in his teens, eventually publishing his first novel, Never Love a Stranger, in 1948.

In the summer of 1989, Robbins sued Kathy Acker for breach of copyright in reproducing pages of The Pirate (1974) in her recently republished novel The Adult Life of Toulouse Lautrec. (Robbins himself had earlier been threatened with a lawsuit by a ‘Miss X,’ who believed that The Pirate’s promiscuous protagonist, Jordana, was modelled on her). Her publisher forced her to write a public apology, an event recorded in her essay ‘History of the Ban: Dead Doll.'
